NaNoWriMo

Nov 29

So, this has been a long time coming.

I’M A WINNER!!!

Ok, now that I’ve got that out of my system.  Yes NaNoWriMo; I came, I saw, I wrote a novel in a month.  56,327 words.  I passed the 50,000 word goal a few days ago, and just put the finishing touches on the whole story a little while ago. This has been one of the best, and most intense writing experiences of my life.  I knew I had the desire to write a novel, but I never knew I had the capacity.  There is still a lot of work to do though; like editing and completely re-writing the entire story I’m sure, but this is a great first step.

I can say that ‘write everyday’ is the best advice I’ve ever heard.  Where at first writing a couple thousand words a day on the same thing was a difficult task, by the end I was churning out a few thousand with ease.

I will keep you all updated as the journey to turn this story into a completed work goes on.

Oh November with your many joys and challenges, and what tops that list of challenges you ask…well the one and only NaNoWriMo of course.  For those who may not have read to the very beginning of this thread; this is my first NaNo(and only the first of many I hope), and I’m pantsing it, as they say, because I didn’t find out about this wonderful phenomenon until just days before it kicked off.

So, in my last update I said I would have exciting anouncements…well I’ve let you down, because that was all a load of poppycock.  Not only did I fail to place in any of my writing challenges this week, but I was also wanting to surprise everyone by saying that I had finished my NaNo novel earlier than expected.  I am still ahead of schedule, and I can tell you that getting under 10,000 words remaining has been a huge relief.  For those of you who care about the word count; it stand at 47,028…that’s right math whizzes, only 2,972 more short words to go.  The good news is I’ll need way more words than that to finish up, and I already know how the rest of the story will flow.  With a little over seven days left; I plan on having the whole novel completed by the end of November.  Wish me luck.

So, another Tuesday has arrived and brought with it all the normal Tuesday blues; too much to do and not enough time to do it in.

Oh how I wish I could be writing right now, but I’ve stolen only a few minutes from the day to take care of this little bit of ‘house-keeping’ before I get pulled back to the doldrums of the daily routine.  I have gotten up two of my challenge pieces so far this week.  They both turned out to be poems which is quite odd; mostly because I’m not a poetry writer, and I’m not even sure if I can classify as poetry…I don’t know any of the poetry ‘rules’, but they do rhyme.  If asked I think I’ll just call them freestyle poems and hope I get away with it.

But now for what this is really supposed to be about; NaNoWriMo.  The typing continues at a furious pace, and the word count as climbed to a respectable 36,736.  I’m looking forward to seeing fewer than 10,000 words remaining.  With just twelve days remaining I’m taking nothing for granted until I cross that finish line at which time I can’t wait to share all the feelings that come along with it.  I’m hoping to have some exciting announcements when I update on Saturday.

Nov 16

First for some housekeeping.  I did get the second excerpt up the other day, and for anyone that missed it here’s a wonderful little linkylink that will take you straight there:  excerpt #2.   But don’t going running over there just yet to check that out; we have plenty more to discuss first.

I won’t keep anyone waiting for the word count update, because I’m thrilled to announce it stands at 30,911.  I know right; who would have ever thought I could make it that far.  I’ve always intended on getting the whole 50,000, but this is so far beyond what I’ve ever put into a single piece that I’m not really sure how to react.  I can happily say that my frazzledness left as soon as I passed the halfway point and started seeing that light at the end of the tunnel; although that may just be a train headed my way.

On a somewhat sadder note I went 0 for 3 on my weekly challenges again; well I guess technically 0 for 2 since I found out that one of them doesn’t even pick winners every week, but since they do come up with pretty good prompts I’m going to keep writing entries until I find a suitable replacement.  I have written my piece for the weekend challenge, and it’s been getting quite a bit of positive feedback, and I won’t be dissuaded; I feel like my writing is getting better each week, and that’s a personal win right?

Anyhow, I’ve almost bested you NaNoWriMo…although my two mains aren’t letting this falling in love thing happen quite the way I expected.

Nov 12

Okay Tuesday…bring it on.  I think this November has been the busiest I’ve ever felt in my life.

I can’t even begin to contemplate how people with full-time jobs and kids to raise can find time to write 50,000 words; they must be machines.  I’m feeling completely frazzled right now just taking time to update this page sits looming in the corner of my brain.  I did breathe a small sigh of relief as I completed the final of my three weekly writing challenge entries and posted it in the early morning hours today.  Now all that’s left to do is sit back and wait in dread to find out if anyone liked my words.

Now for those of you looking for the old word count update (drum roll please…); 23,018!!!  Yeah me, I’m still ahead of pace to finish on time, and yes that’s over 7,000 words in the last three days…I’ve really been able to turn up the heat as I’ve gotten closer to my two love birds finally getting on the same page and realizing that they’ve become something more than friends.

My goal for the next couple of days(besides furiously typing away) is to get another small excerpt up for anyone that might be interested.

Nov 9

Good Afternoon NaNoWriMo, and welcome to another glorious Saturday.  For those of you who want the word count update there will be suspense this week.  I can proudly report things are still on track as my progress stands at 15,943 words(and to put that into perspective for those playing at home; at this point this entire page is a little over 1,000 words).  My characters have made it past the first leg of the novel and have been somewhat let down by the sad state of the world and how quickly it has degenerated, they have just escaped a second menacing threat that sought to kill them for no apparent reason, and my two main characters Clint and Zoey(not sure if those will be the final names) are still getting on each others nerves from time to time, but are starting to notice some good qualities in each other as well.

For any of those wondering how the various writing challenges I entered into last week turned out.  I went 0 for 3; like I said in the last post there was some really great writing out there this time, and having read the pieces the winners submitted I can totally agree with the way the vote went down.  Besides, I like to think of myself as the unmentioned fourth place finisher in situations like this.

Anyhow….I will soldier on.  My main focus the past couple of days has been the noveling, and I’m back to being slightly ahead of schedule…now if I can just get these kids safely to their next destination I will be able to introduce an event that will bring my two mains much closer together.

Nov 7

So, I knew that I had missed a couple of days updating my NaNoWriMo page…I don’t know how it got to four days…am I loosing time, or just my mind.  There have been a flurry of words pouring out of my fingers as I’ve spent quite a bit of time in front of this laptop since the last time I wrote to you.

I’ve finished all three of pieces for the weekly challenges I take part in; I’ve decided that I’m not going to miss those and use NaNo as the excuse.  That would just be too easy.  So, keep your fingers crossed that I can place again this week…I’ve been reading the other entries, and some of them are absolutely amazing; one even made me cry a little.

But now down to business; you came here looking for a NaNoWriMo update, and just to recap…all the way back on the 3rd(a whole 4 days ago) I said I was closing in on 5,000 words.  Well my lovelies I am very excited to tell you I hit a writing spurt the other day, and I have passed 10,000(11,453 to be exact).  I’m counting getting this far into a piece like this a small victory already.  Amazingly enough this only puts me on pace to finish right on time.  Luckily I have most of tomorrow set up to focus on NaNo only, and I hope to get out ahead of this thing a little bit.  Wish me luck.

Nov 3

Oh NaNoWriMo why do you toy with me so.  Three days in and it’s finally starting to dawn on me how big 50,000 words is, and for those of you that don’t know…it’s a lot.  I still haven’t fallen into any plot holes, or hit any walls, but I am starting to see how daunting a task this is; especially when you have other distractions in your life…yes I’m talking about you laundry, and dishes, and need I go on.

On a lighter note my entry to The Speakeasy’s weekly writing comp for last week came in 3rd, and yes I did a happy dance.  I’ve only recently started letting people read my writing, and to say that it was reassuring to have complete strangers say they like it would be a gross understatement.

But back to NaNo; I’m close to 5,000 words(yeah 10%), and this is easily already the longest single piece I’ve ever written.  Now I just have to keep the distractions to a minimum and keep forging on.  Keep wishing me luck….I’m going to need it.

Nov 2

So, I’ve survived the first day of NaNoWriMo…in fact, I feel pretty good about it; I’ve already passed 2,000 words, and at this pace should finish with plenty of time to spare.  I’ve begun introducing my two main characters to each other, and thrown out the first challenge for them to take on.

But alas, day two has arrived, and brought with it a whole list of everyday distractions that yesterday did not posses.  So now I head off to finish up some back story, introduce my two main characters to each, and throw a nice conflict in their faces…and then see how they come out on the other side of it.  Oh, and I need to squeeze in some laundry too.

Oct 31
So, I’ve decided to try to set up a page for updates on my progress with NaNoWriMo; or at least for updates on my attempts to NaNoWriMo.

In full disclosure, I actually decided to create this page a couple of days ago, but I’ve been a little hesitant to do it because I’m a complete newb at having a blog, and have no idea what most of these shiny new buttons do….but I will forge on into the unknown, undaunted by my ignorance (see, I’ve got my creative juices flowing already).

Since we’re being completely honest with each other; I will also admit that I don’t actually have a theme, plot, or even much of a vague idea for what my novel will be about.  My plan all along has just been to wait until 12:00 am on November the 1st, and just letting it all flow out of me; what could possibly go wrong with that.  I’m sure it will be a love story; I do love me a good love story…espcially one that takes place against all odds.

The preparation I have done has mostly consisted of spending a lot of time in the ‘Plot Doctoring’ forum on NaNoWriMo.org, hopping from thread to thread, and throwing out ideas where I can.  I don’t know if the comments I’ve posted will end up helping anyone or not, but the exercise has definitely helped me to feel more creative.

I have to admit my mind feels a bit more nimble right now after jumping around between so many very different topics…I’ve also discovered that I harbor the deep seeded belief that there is no plot hole big enough it can’t be filled with a throbbing horde of zombies….oh the things you learn about yourself when you’ve had no sleep.
